Why expansion of Outer Ring road is behind schedule

Land compensation and relocation of services like water and electricity have resulted in several major road works in Nairobi falling behind schedule.

Among the roads works delayed include the Sh7 billion expansion of Nairobi’s Outering Road over a stretch of 13km which is only 5 per cent done.

According to Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Engineer John Musonik, acquisition of land belonging to residents of Donholm, relocation of electricity and water services and dispute over payment of VAT by the contractor has left the work behind schedule by nine months.

EL NINO RAINS

He however said the contractor has now mobilized 90 per cent of resources with works expected to peak in the next three months.

“The expected El Nino rains will definitely slow down the construction but we have set aside Sh2 billion to cater for that,” said Engineer Musonik.

Construction work of the Outering Road was launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta on January 22 and the actual work, which began on September 17, was expected to be complete by September 2017.

Other roads construction projects which are behind schedule include the Upper Hill Road, which is now 76 per cent done as opposed to an expected 94 per cent.
