At least ten killed in Gikomba terror attack

At least ten people have been killed and over 70 others injured following two explosions early Friday afternoon at Gikomba market.

The first blast went of near Pefa church where a 14-seater matatu was involved.The matatu’s left hand side was filled with shrapnel holes and all its tyres were deflated.

The second blast took place around the same area in an open space where traders were selling their wares sending them scampering for safety.

According to eye witnesses, the two explosions were only seconds apart.

Confirming the incident, Nairobi police boss Benson Kibue said that two suspects were arrested at the scene and are in police custody.

“One of the suspects was arrested by members of the public who spotted him during the incident, we want to thank the public for assisting in apprehending the suspect,” he added.

Is is still not clear what kind of explosive devices were used in the attack.Officers from the bomb disposal unit are still collecting evidence from the scene.

The attacks took place as President Uhuru Kenyatta was was addressing the nation live from State House.He sent a message condolence to the families that have lost loved ones in the two blasts.

The Gikomba blasts come barely two weeks after explosions ripped through two buses plying the Thika Superhighway route.
