Indian woman found dead at Temple flats

Detectives attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are investigating an incident in which the body of a woman was found hanging from a window grill at a city apartment.

DCI boss George Kinoti, in a statement, said Vanitah Nikesh, 27, was found hanging from the window grills by neighbors at the Swaminarayan Temple flats house number one which is located along the Southern bypass, off Lang’ata road.

“Security guards manning the premises broke the door leading to the flat and found the lifeless body hanging on a piece of clothing, as the woman’s two-months-old infant lay on an adjacent bed.

Mr Kinoti revealed the husband of the deceased identified as Mr Nikesh Haarji Shanghani was not in the house at the time of the discovery.

Those who were the first to arrive at the scene then alerted police officers based at Lang’ata police station who rushed there.

According to the DCI boss the couple had been blessed with three children, a four-year-old boy and two twins who were barely two months old.

“Preliminary investigations indicated that the woman had taken her own life, due to mistreatment by the husband whom it was alleged was a drunkard and rarely provided for the family,” the report read in part.

“The man had returned home late that night, but left at around 6am after a heated argument and proceeded to an establishment at Galleria Mall, where he continued drinking with a friend,” it further added.

It has also emerged that on the fateful morning, the deceased had handed their 4-year-old son to her next-door neighbor and asked her to proceed with him to the temple before she joined them.

The twin sister to the 2-months-old baby who was found in the bedroom was said to be with the woman’s mother-in-law who was residing a few blocks away.

Detectives interviewed relatives and neighbors who revealed that the husband had brought the deceased from India and they started residing as husband and wife.

The statement further revealed that the woman’s body was cremated the following day April 4, 2022, at the Kariokor crematorium in accordance with the Hindu culture.

“However, serious questions emerged afterwards into the circumstances leading to the woman’s death, opening a fresh can of worms in what could have been a comedy of errors by the first responders to the scene of the incident,” he said.

After forensic examination by sleuths attached to the homicide wing, “the experts could not rule out the possibility of foul play due to the position of the body and the knot patterns of the clothing that the deceased was found hanging on.”

“Acoustics and the Homicide team went back to the scene and discovered that CCTV footage recorded on the day of the murder at an adjacent temple had been deleted, pointing to a likely conspiracy into the death of the woman,” Kinoti said.

On Thursday, April 21, the deceased husband was placed behind bars last evening, as the homicide detectives conclude investigations into the mysterious death.

Consequently, the Director DCI George Kinoti, has instituted far-reaching changes at the Langata DCI command, based on how this incident was handled.
