Three women arrested while partying charged with assaulting police officer
Three women who were arrested in Eldoret on Sunday night while on a drinking spree on suspicion of engaging in criminal activities have been charged with assaulting a police officer on duty and preventing other officers from discharging their duties.
Fauzia Matua, Juliet Kweyu and Lina Kuya were charged with assaulting and injuring police constable Ahmed Abdala of Baharini Police Station. The accused allegedly injured PC Abdala along Eldoret-Webuye road on the night of March 5, 2023.
Mr Abdala and his colleagues were on night patrol when they attempted to arrest the suspects who were also accused of being a public nuisance after drinking alcohol in a local bar.

The court heard that the three were ordered by the police to stop at Roadblock shopping centre but they defied the orders and instead started assaulting one of the officers who attempted to arrest them. They were also charged with resisting arrest contrary to the National Police Service Act of 2011.
Ms Kweyu is facing another charge of refusing to have her fingerprints taken by a police officer who was preparing charges against her. She pleaded guilty to the charge and the court fined her Sh10,000 or serve a jail term of two months.

In her mitigation, she told the court that she regretted her actions, saying she is expected to join an international university on scholarship and she feared being denied a letter of good conduct if her fingerprints were taken by police.
“I regret what I did, I ask this court to forgive me and I will never repeat it and neither will I be found in a drinking den,” she told the court.
All three women denied the assault charges and were each released on Sh50,000 bond with no alternative of cash bail. The case will be mentioned on March 23, 2023.
