Raila proposes new laws of kick Jalang’o out of parliament
Azimio leader Raila Odinga is advocating for a change in the law to kick out members of parliament who switch allegiance to supporting other political parties without resigning from their member party.
Mr Odinga spoke in Imara Daima on March 27, 2023, while leading his bi-weekly demonstrations.
He stressed that there is a need to come up with measures that limit what he described as “party prostitution”.
“Tunataka katiba ibadilishwe, mnakubali? Tunataka yule mbunge ambaye amenunuliwa, amefanya umalaya ya siasa arudi kwa wananchi (we want the constitution to be changed, do you agree? We want that MP who has been bopught, the one who has done political prostitution to come back to the voters and ask for a fresh mandate),” Mr Odinga said.
Other issues that Mr Odinga mentioned during the address include lowering the cost of living, halting the ongoing recruitment of Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commision (IEBC) commissioners, opening IEBC servers and resignation of the government of the day, claiming he won the August 2022 polls.
Mr Odinga’s comments come at a time several MPs who were elected on parties under the Azimio coalition have disagreed with the ongoing demonstrations, and some changed their tune to support President William Ruto’s government.
Among the Azimio MPs who have met with the President and promised to work together include the Lang’ata MP Phelix Odiwuor (Jalang’o), Gideon Ochanda (Bondo), Elisha Odhiambo (Gem), Mark Nyamita (Uriri), Caroli Omondi (Suba South), Shakeel Shabir (Kisumu East, Independent), Paul Abuor (Rongo), John Owino (Awendo) and Kisumu Senator Tom Ojieda.
However, the President defended the defiant MPs from both ODM and Jubilee Party, saying that they are at liberty to work for the people who elected them irrespective of their political stand.
While defending the meeting with the President, Jalang’o said that he used the opportunity to follow up on the construction of affordable housing in the Highrise ward and the completion of the Lang’ata Tvet.
“The project is on and the contractor is on the ground, an extra Sh50 million has been located for the completion.”
His move saw him being kicked out of the Azimio meeting last month and has since been out of the Azimio protests.
