Gachagua intensifies battle against illegal brew in Central Kenya

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has fired a stern warning to the provincial administrators, as the fight against illicit brew in the Central Region gains momentum.

The second in command has reiterated that he will not relent on his cause to bring to past illicit brew menace in his backyard.

Mr Gachagua said the war will be enabled by chiefs and their assistants, claiming they solely understand the brewers and their hiding outs.

“There are only two options; either the chief or illicit brew must disappear,” he said.

The DP issued the warning on April 30, 2023, while addressing Muigai Wa Njoroge’s event marking 25 years in the music industry.

The event was held in Thika, and it was attended by a section of political leaders from Mt Kenya Region.

Trade CS, Mr Moses Kuria was also among the guests.

“I will not stay and watch as people succumb to poisonous alcohol in my backyard. President William Ruto and I have vowed to rescue our people. The operation will also be extended in other parts of the country,” Gachagua stated.

The DP has consistently been accusing the previous regime, led by the former President Uhuru Kenyatta over what he terms as laxity in curbing alcohol menace.

He further alleged that former Internal PS, Dr Karanja Kibicho was the mastermind of illicit brew.

“What do you expect from someone entitled to fight against the problem, yet he is the one owning alcohol factories?” he wondered.

“They were determined to ensure our people do not thrive. They wanted to wipe us out through illicit brew.”

Last month, Gachagua convened a consultative meeting with police bosses from Mt Kenya region where he instructed them to crack the whip on brewers.

The meeting was also attended by elected political leaders from the region, urging them to support his campaign.
