GSU officer on the spot for ‘robbing mini-supermarket in Kisii town’
Details of how an officer attached to the General Service Unit (GSU) has been terrorising locals in Kisii County were exposed when he was subjected to mob justice after reportedly stealing a mobile phone from a student.
Constable Edgar Opollo was saved by regular police officers as he was being assaulted by locals who cornered him moments after stealing the phone. At the time he was armed with an AK47 rifle.
“Police officers found the suspect under a hail of hefty blows. On inquiry, the officers established the suspect had robbed a smartphone from a Kisii University student and on frisking the injured suspect found the phone,” a police statement read in part.
His arrest, led to another big discovery after it emerged that the GSU officer was the same man who led robbers into a mini supermarket located in Corner Mbaya, Kisii County where they made away with Sh40,000.
It was not a matter of who stole but when the suspect would be arrested as already sleuths attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had settled on Mr Opollo as the main suspect.
“The incident was captured by CCTV cameras showing three robbers who had partly covered their faces, two of whom were armed, one with an AK47 and the other with a pistol,” the statement further revealed.
During the robbery at the mini supermarket, Opollo was dressed in police fatigue.
It was after the arrest that officers in Kisii Central Police Station conducted an identification parade and the supermarket owner successfully identified him as one of the robbers who accosted him.
The suspect is currently admitted at the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital where he is recuperating.
It is worth noting that he is under police guard and that he will record a statement once he is discharged from the hospital.
