Literature, music and food as Shakespeare turns 400

It was pomp and colour on Thursday night as the British High Commissioner Nic Hailey invited guests at his residence in Muthaiga to mark William Shakespeare’s 400th birthday.

‘Shakespeare Lives’ is an unprecedented global programme of events and activities to celebrate William Shakespeare’s work.

This week marks 400 years since the death of William Shakespeare. Just like with his birthday, the exact date of death is a mystery. It is widely believed that he died on April 23rd, 1616, but no official record exists. However his funeral took place two days later.

“The event is an invitation to the world to join in the festivities by participating in a unique online collaboration and experiencing the work of Shakespeare directly on stage, through film, exhibitions and in schools,” according to British Council director in Kenya Tony Reilly.

The programme will run throughout 2016, exploring Shakespeare as a living writer who still speaks for all people and nations.

Thursday’s event was attended by who is who in Kenya’s literary circles.

Sauti Sol made a cameo appearance and performed with children from World Voices.

Kenyan Hip hop artist and British Council Youth Ambassador Octopizzo performed together with a British Hip-Hop group the Shakespeare Company.

Later Muthoni DQ joined Octopizzo for a mesmerising performance.

UK High Commissioner Nic Hailey left everyone in stitches as he tried to translate Shakespeare’s best quotes in Swahili.
