Traders camp at Ruto’s office over market fee
Traders of fresh produce on Tuesday camped outside deputy President William Ruto’s office along Harambee avenue to protest service fees increments.
The new fees are part of the Nairobi City County Finance Act passed by the governor last year, which led to dramatic rises in the costs of services offered by the county government.
In the new rates, traders who sell goods displayed on the market floor will pay sh50, up from sh25.
The traders claim that they were not consulted in the drafting of the law and that the new fees would be detrimental to their businesses.
“We feel that the charges are extremely high and exorbitant and we therefore request for an urgent meeting between us and county government representatives,” reads a letter that the traders wrote to Governor Evand Kidero.

Representatives from the Wakulima, Muthurwa, Quarry Road, Kawangware, Muthurwa, Kibera and Kangemi markets signed the letter.
On Monday, the traders held a protest outside City Hall demanding a meeting with Governor Evans Kidero.
