Nkaissery extends New Year festivity, declares January 2 a public holiday

Kenyans will have an extended New Year break after the government declared Monday a public holiday.

In a gazette notice published on Thursday, Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery declared January 2 a public holiday.

β€œIt is notified for the general information of the public that the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Coordination of National Government, in exercise of the powers conferred by Section 3 of the Public Holidays Act, declares that Monday, the January 2nd, 2017, be a public holiday,” the notice read.

The Public Holidays Act states that if a holiday falls on a Sunday, the next day (Monday) automatically becomes a holiday too. This is because Sundays are traditionally off days.

The same reasoning had been used in declaring December 27 a public holiday.

Schools are expected to open for the first term on January 4.
