Githurai police officer shoots lover dead before failed suicide bid

A police officer shot and killed his girlfriend in Githurai Kimbo before attempting suicide.

The officer shot Ms Eddyius Kanana three times at her house on Sunday night, moments after excusing himself from his colleagues’ company, saying he wanted to go to the toilet.

The officer then turned his G3 rifle on himself, inflicting serious injuries to his head and is now hospitalised in serious condition.

His colleagues said they heard multiple gunshots from Ms Kanana’s house, which is just a few metres from where they were.

POOL OF BLOOD

“They rushed to the house and found the woman in a pool of blood and the officer was lying next to her writhing in pain,” Ruiru OCPD Isaac Thuranira said.

The incident comes just four days after a police officer shot dead his colleague and injured another before killing himself in Tassia Estate, Nairobi.

Constable Patrick Kihagi killed James Makokha and injured Dominic Ng’etich before shooting himself at midnight.

The three were attached to an undercover unit code-named Spiv at Embakasi police station before Mr Ng’etich was transferred to the Kenya Airports Police Unit.

Cases of police officers killing themselves or turning the gun against their friends and family have been on the rise.

The National Police Service last year commissioned a team of officers to establish the reasons behind the escalating cases.
