Bungoma lawmaker Catherine Wambilianga asks residents to farm, cease maandamano
Bungoma Woman Representative Catherine Wambilianga has emphasized the need for a revitalized agricultural sector in Western Kenya to address the prevailing issue of food insecurity in the country.
Wambilianga called upon the government to establish grain handling silos in every locality within the region, so as to ensure farmers have easy access to seeds and fertilizers.
“Let us unite as politicians despite our political differences. Let’s forget the small things like maandamano..we depend on agriculture (for survival) in Western Kenya so let’s go do the farming. I want to tell the area MP to please bring the silos close to home so that our people do not have to go to Malaba,” said Ms Wambilianga.
During a fund drive held at St. Alexander Catholic Church in Butula Constituency, Busia County, Wambilianga stressed the significance of empowering local farmers through enhanced agricultural production. Recognizing the crucial role that agriculture plays in the region’s economy and livelihoods, she highlighted the need for infrastructure such as grain handling silos, which would enable farmers to store their produce and access essential farming inputs more conveniently.
Wambilianga further urged the Azimio brigade, a political movement, to engage in parliamentary processes and utilize the laid-down legislative channels to hold the Kenya Kwanza government accountable. Rather than resorting to demonstrations.
She encouraged the opposition group to push for effective parliamentary policies that can keep the government in check and ensure transparency and accountability.
Her sentiments come at a time food security has become a matter of concern across Kenya.
By advocating for a revamped agricultural production system and improved access to farming resources, Wambilianga aims to address the challenges faced by farmers in Western Kenya, thereby contributing to the overall goal of achieving food security in the country.
Wambilianga’s call for the establishment of grain handling silos resonates with the need for efficient post-harvest management practices. Such infrastructure helps minimize losses incurred by farmers due to inadequate storage facilities and enable them to access necessary agricultural inputs in a timely manner, ultimately boosting productivity and reducing food scarcity.
