Chandarana supermarkets open despite Sonko’s move on licences

Chandarana Foodplus upermarket branches continued to operate Monday despite an order by Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko cancelling the chain’s licences.

A visit to Ngara and Muthaiga branches showed normal operations going on with shoppers getting in and out of the food chain.

At the head office located at Lenana Place, efforts to reach out to the management were futile as we were told that the directors were in a meeting.

SONKO’S ORDER

They promised to revert at the end of the meeting.

“Leave behind your contacts and after the meeting you will be called concerning the issue,” said the company’s receptionist.

Sonko’s order, which was made on Sunday evening, resulted from complaints about racism at the retail chain after a leaked email disclosed it was planning a marketing strategy which aims at attracting “white customers”.

But legal experts said the governor’s action was uncalled for since he has no mandate to issue such orders single-handedly.
