Close call: How detectives thwarted hitmen on murder mission in Kericho

Details of how detectives attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), acting on intelligence, foiled a planned murder in Kericho County can now be revealed.

Two suspects, Philip Omollo and Dan Kuma, were arrested.

“The duo were arrested on their way to Kericho County where they are believed to have been hired to commit murder and other atrocities,” reads part of a DCI statement seen by this reporter.

Omollo and Kuma are believed to be part of a gang of seven who on 10 May 2023 invaded a homestead in Lala village, Arujo location in Homabay County.

The seven then assaulted a woman before fleeing with household items of unknown value.

Investigators say the seven were sent to the house to eliminate the family and then turned their attention to the man of the house, where they hit him on the head with a blunt object, knocking him unconscious.

Fortunately, the man survived the fatal attack before the family rushed to report the matter to the police.

The DCI says the suspects then carried out a similar incident on the night of 23 and 24 April, raiding five houses in Cinema Market in the Gem constituency.

“They assaulted a woman before making away with household items including television sets, gas cookers, mobile phones and other electronic goods,” the statement added.

Police say the suspects, who wreaked havoc in the vast Homabay district, are in custody and are currently being questioned by detectives in connection with the reported incidents before being charged to court.
