Details have emerged of the unexpected turn of events that prevented the scheduled post-mortem on the body of Mr Michael Onyancha on Monday, December 18, 2023.

Nairobi News understands that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters along Kiambu Road intervened in the case, prompting the homicide squad to take over the investigation.

This included moving the autopsy and the entire investigation from Kasarani Police Station.

According to police reports, Mr Onyancha was last seen alive, entering a building where he eventually died, accompanied by a tenant identified as Mercy Waithera Mwangi.

According to friends and family, the two had spent time at a nightclub along Thika Road before going to Ms Mwangi’s rented house.

“They left the joint at 10:30 pm and arrived at the house at 11 pm as per the CCTV footage which we have seen,” Mr Steve Chege, a close ally to the deceased, said.

CCTV footage obtained by Nairobi News shows the pair arriving at Kasarani Estate, where Ms Mwangi’s house is located.

In the footage, Ms Mwangi is seen rushing up the stairs, leaving Mr Onyancha struggling to climb. She later returns to help him before opening the door to her home.

Neighbours reported hearing loud arguments and noise coming from Ms Mwangi’s house. One neighbour, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said there was a considerable commotion, but the exact details of the argument were unclear.

Moments later, a loud noise was heard, like something heavy hitting the ground, and a neighbour looking out saw the legs of a person. The caretaker was alerted and tried unsuccessfully to revive Mr Onyancha.

According to the caretaker, Ms Mwangi claimed to have asked him to leave, which led to the altercation.

Mr Onyancha was rushed to St Francis Hospital in Kasarani Sub-County but was pronounced dead on arrival.

A report of the incident was received at Kasarani Police Station under Occurrence Book (OB) number 06/16/12/2023.

Police officers arrested Ms Mwangi at the scene, but she was released the same day under unclear circumstances.
