Erick Omondi on the political spot after meeting with Odingas
The spotlight is on renowned comedian Erick Omondi’s next move, amid reports he is set to try his luck in politics.
The rumour mill has been at overdrive since Omondi recently separately met Azimio leader Raila Odinga and his wife mama Ida Odinga.
Before these meetings, Omondi has transformed into a fiery activist.
He has openly been bashing President William Ruto’s government over among other matters, the lack of jobs among the youth and his cost of living.
The actor has also been at the forefront in assisting Kenyans in need via his popular social media platforms.
His interaction with mama Ida Odinga occured when he accompanied her to a charity engagement in Siaya.
“I accompanied Mama Dr Ida Odinga to St. Augustine Nyamonye Girls to Donate, Sanitary towels, books and Soap.
“Mama also gave me the opportunity to adopt one girl, Shanice. I will pay Shanice’s school fees from form one until form four. I am officially a parent at Nyamonye Girls,” the comedian wrote.
This comes barely two days after meeting Mr Odinga at his Siaya home.
“Spent the day with Baba Yesterday and received too much wisdom. The future is too bright.
“There is a lot of hope. Tomorrow looks good,” Omondi captioned a video shaking hands with the Azimio leader.
His close association with the Odingas has reawakened speculations among Kenyans that Omondi will be vying for the Lang’ata parliamentary seat in 2027.
In July 2023, the comedian hinted that, “I am not replacing or planning to replace anyone, but given the chance, I would. I have never talked about Lang’ata (but if it’s) Kenyans this is what I will tell them. The voice of the people is God’s voice.”
Mr Odinga is a prominent politician in the Kenyan landscape scene who has a history of nurturing several politicians, including in his native Nyanza region, or some parts of Nairobi including Kibera and Langata.
Mr Omondi’s emergence comes at a time Mr Odinga has fallen out with Langata lawmaker Phelix Odiwuor aka Jalang’o.
Jalang’o was recently expelled from the ODM party after the political outfit’s disciplinary committee ruled that he had disobeyed the party by ‘being to close to President William Ruto’ and voting against his party stance in the National Assembly.
Prior to that, Omondi has been slowly embracing philanthropy after a stint as an activist.
On April 19, 2023, the controversial comedian shared a video of himself buying and gifting school uniforms to four needy school-going children.
“Today we bought school uniforms for 4 very needy Pupils of Joash Olum Primary,” he shared on his socials.
He had also shared a video of himself with some women who he said he helped settle their hospital bills.
In the video, Omondi said he secured the release of the five women by paying their bills at Pumwani Maternity Hospital.
“We have released 5 new mothers who had been detained at Pumwani maternity. Mr. President, before you pay 50 CASs millions of Shillings before the Government buys brand new cars for the Executive, PLEASE make an order for all Mothers detained at Pumwani and across the country to be released.”
Besides the philanthropy acts, Omondi has severally been arrested in the recent past, in relation to demonstrations he has been holding in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) aimed at putting pressure on President William Ruto’s government to lower the cost of living.
