Manager reveals cause of rapper Coolio’s death

The manager of Grammy Award-winning rapper Coolio, Jarel Posey, announced that the musician had passed away from a fentanyl overdose six months after being found dead at a friend’s residence in Los Angeles at the age of 59.

According to the rapper’s family, he also had traces of heroin and methamphetamine in his system—a deadly combination that could have led to his sudden death.

Coolio, whose real name was Artis Leon Ivey Jr., rose to fame with his 1995 hit “Gangsta’s Paradise” from the album of the same name, which was also featured in the movie “Dangerous Minds.”

The song won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance the following year. Jarez Posey, Coolio’s manager, stated that the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office informed the singer’s family about the cause of his death.

As per Posey, Coolio’s children intend to pay tribute to their father in forthcoming documentary and film projects. Coolio was born in Pennsylvania in 1963 and started performing in the West Coast hip-hop scene after relocating to Compton, California.

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid up to 50 times more potent than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine. It significantly contributes to fatal and non-fatal overdoses in the United States.

Pharmaceutical fentanyl, prescribed by doctors to treat severe pain, is one type of fentanyl. Illicitly manufactured fentanyl, the second form of the drug, is a synthetic opioid distributed through illegal drug markets for its heroin-like effects.

It is often added to other drugs because of their extreme potency, which makes them more affordable, powerful, addictive, and dangerous. Fentanyl and other synthetic opioids are the most common drugs implicated in overdose deaths, causing over 150 fatalities each day. Even in small amounts, fentanyl can be lethal.
