Finally! NTSA renews Bolt’s operating licence

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has renewed the operating license of taxi-hailing company, Bolt.

The move comes as a reprieve to the firm which is owned by an Estonian company, coming after weeks of push and pull with the Kenyan regulator.

“This is to certify that Bolt Operations OU of PLOT No. L.R. 209/22216 has been duly licensed by National Transport and Safety Authority under license No. NTSA/TNC/2023/004 to conduct transport network business in Kenya pursuant to and in accordance with the provision of the National Transport and Safety Authority,” the license issued on October 30th reads.

The transport regulator had initially declined to renew Bolt’s license over alleged breaches of its provision, one being the illegal commission charges and booking fee.

The last license of the taxi firm was issued on October 28, 2023.

NTSA deputy director and head of licensing Cosmas Ngeso addressed the taxi company country manager Linda Ndungu informing her of the development, which would have seen them shutting business in the country.

Bolt had earlier addressed the transport regulator, requesting for the renewal of its license.

NTSA said that some of the obstacles that had caused a delay in the renewal of Bolt’s license were complaints from drivers and their representatives about alleged non-compliance and violation of regulations.

“Please note that the Authority is not able to proceed with the renewal of your operator licence until when the issues raised by drivers and their representatives are satisfactorily addressed and rectified,” Mr Ngeso said in a letter.

The development comes barely a week after a male Bolt driver was captured exposing her private parts to a client.
