Gardener arrested over murder of Swiss couple in posh estate

Police in Mombasa have arrested a gardener in connection with the murder of a Swiss couple.

The bodies of the Caucasian couple were found dumped beside a road in Kiembeni, Mombasa County by residents.

Kisauni OCPD Christopher Rotich confirmed that the elderly couple were Swiss nationals.

He said the suspect was arrested by police at the house the foreigners were residing in Nyali Estate. The suspect is being interrogated by police at the Kisauni Dog section.

Mr Rotich said police are hunting down three more suspects including a caretaker, a watchman and a neighbour.

TRACKED PHONE

“We have tracked the phone of the caretaker and we have seen he is in Nairobi. We are also following the two others,” said Mr Rotich.

He said the two foreigners were killed upon their arrival in Mombasa from Switzerland.

“They arrived at Moi International Airport after midnight with luggage which was taken by the killers. We suspect that their car which was parked at the house was used to transport the bodies and dumped where we found them,” he said, adding that the vehicle which was at the house compound had blood stains.

Speaking to the Nation on phone, Mr Rotich added that the foreigners were pensioners who had been in the country for about 10 years.

CONTACT FAMILY

He added that they had contacted the Switzerland Embassy to enable the deceased’s family be informed about the sad news.

The incident came two days after an Italian committed suicide after locking himself in a car and setting it ablaze at a beach in Malindi, Kilifi County.

According to preliminary investigations by the police, the Italian identified as Edmond Buffa, 71, had been residing in Malindi for 20 years and was operating Tusker Safaris, a tourists’ advisory company.
