Health CS explains why Weston was not closed

Health cabinet secretary Cleopa Mailu has explained why Weston Hotel was not closed down.

According to the CS, the food that was consumed during the science conference at Weston Hotel was out sourced.

In an interview with a local media house, Dr Mailu said Weston Hotel was not closed alongside Jacaranda Hotel and San Valencia because the contaminated food was not from the hotel.

“When we went to inspect Weston, no worker was found with the virus and even after inspecting the hotel’s kitchen there was no virus,” said Dr Mailu.

OUTSOURCED FOOD

When asked why a hotel was outsourcing food, the CS admitted that a hotel should not outsource food and if it must, it should give the ministry a 14-day notice to inspect the supplier’s premise.

Dr Mailu said an inspection of Jacaranda Hotel and San Valencia premises revealed that there was cholera virus hence the closure.

The CS refuted claims by Jacaranda Hotels that they were not notified of closure.

He stated that a letter was written to Jacaranda on Monday on the guidelines that they ought to follow.

CLOSURE NOTICE

“If they want to go against the closure orders it is on them but they should not lie to Kenyans that they never received a closure notice,” Dr Mailu said during an interview on KTN.

He added that the ministry has received Jacaranda Hotel’s appeal but will only reopen if the management acts on the recommendations given to ensure they follow the guidelines.

Dr Mailu also confirmed that two government official fell ill after the trade conference but refuted claims that he feared the Deputy President William Ruto and opted not to close Weston Hotel.
