How ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo is ‘helping’ Gor Mahia win the league title

ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo appears to have taken up the task of aiding Gor Mahia win the 2022/2023 Football Kenya Federation Premier League title.

On June 19, 2023, Owalo, a staunch football and basketball fan, hosted Posta Rangers players for a luncheon at the Tin Tin resturant located at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi and challenged them to perform well in the remaining matches of the league season.

He further motivated them with a Sh200,000 token ahead of their league clash versus Tusker.

Tusker, who are embroiled in a neck to neck race for league title with Gor Mahia, will host Posta Rangers at Ruaraka Grounds on June 19, 2023 as the league returns after a two-week break.

The competition had taken a break to allow the national team Harambee Stars prepare and participate at the Four Nations Cup in Mauritius.

While Gor Mahia leads the league standings with 67 points with two matches to go, Tusker are second with two points less and have insisted they will not give up on the league title until the last game.

“Most importantly, I want to make one appeal. I want you to win your match against Tusker on Wednesday. That is the most fundamental message I want to tell you. After winning against Tusker then everything will fall in place,” said Owalo as he was being applauded by Posta Rangers players.

After Tusker, Posta Rangers who are 11th on the log on 39 points, will finish the season on by hosting Bandari at the Moi International Sports Center Kasarani Annex three days later.

Gor Mahia who host a tough Kakamega Homeboyz at MISC Kasarani on Wednesday can lift the league title with one match to go if they win and Tusker lose to Posta Rangers.

K’Ogalo face Nairobi City in its last game while the brewers will be at Mumias Sports Complex on Saturday against Vihiga Bullets.

“By a show of hands can you assure me you are going to win on Wednesday? If you win against Tusker I want to promise you that I will personally reward you handsomely. Today I have Sh200,000 for you,” added the CS as he gave a Sh200,000 to Posta Rangers captain Bernard Ondiek.

The CS also challenged the team to defend the football title at the Kenya Communications Sports Organisation (KECOSO) games which will kick off in October.

He said in the early 2000s Posta Rangers had a very strong team in the local league and encouraged the current players to do well next season.

“Take Kecoso seriously because it has produced some of the top players in the country. Some were playing for Kenya Railways, Kenya Postal Corporation and other state parastatals,” he said.

Postmaster-General John Tonui said they will clear the Sh480,000 winning bonus for May before Wednesday and gave the team a chance of finishing among the top five teams next season.

The event was also graced by Postmaster General board chairperson Rose Nyamunga and technical bench members led by the team Head Coach John Kamau.
