How Sauti Sol ‘fired’ Chimano from radio job
Bubbly presenter Mwalimu Rachel has opened up on how Sauti Sol forced one of their own to quit his job as a radio presenter.
Long before the band became a household name, Willis Chimano one of the Sauti Sol members, was a radio presenter at Homeboyz radio.
Chimano who openly came out as gay, hosted a show with Mwali Rachel and singer Dela Maranga as his co-host.
A renowned comedian Mwalimu Rachel claims Chimano had grown to become the radio station boss John Rabar’s favourite due to his deep voice and eloquence.
But just when he thought he would see the most of him on the radio, Chimano was forced to quit by Sauti Sol.
“Chimano was the golden boy of Homeboyz radio because of his golden voice. He would talk on the mic and you fall in love, our boss loved him,” Mwalimu Rachel recounts.
Then one day Chimano showed up at work and informed his peers and the boss that he was quitting.
“He said he was in a band of fur people and his band told him to choose between radio and them and he chose music.”
Mwalimu Rachel and his colleagues urged him to stay put but Chimano wouldn’t listen or care else.
“We told him not to do it But Chimano said he had to follow his heart. One month later while watching The Beat we saw Chimano singing Lazizi on TV. He was big from there, it was such a gamble and it paid off,”
