Kisumu on lock down ahead of presidential poll

Youth in Kisumu have placed the lakeside city on lock down mode, in an effort to prevent the distribution of ballot papers to polling centres in the county ahead of Thursday’s presidential election.

Street protests have also been witnessed for the better part of Wednesday with the youths resorting to barricading all major highways heading into and out of the city.

A spot check by Nairobi News indicates the Kisumu-Kakamega, Kisumu-Busia and Kisumu-Nairobi roads are almost inaccessible.

Only private cars and public service vehicles are allowed passage within the routes and even some of these have to be thoroughly searched.

ELECTION BOYCOTT

Besides, all cars in the city are seemingly compelled to have twigs, in solidarity with the protesters.

Some of the youth are also reportedly soliciting for money from the motorists in exchange to granting passage.

“The issue of having elections is out of question here until we access the servers. We don’t support that process at all and are awaiting ‘Baba’ (Raila Odinga) to show us the way forward,” one of the youth told Nairobi News.

The Nasa leader, who boasts a strong following in the lakeside city, has boycotted the election and was set to issue a statement on ‘the way forward’ on Wednesday afternoon.
