KRA unveils new mobile payment platform

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has introduced a new format under which Kenyans can pay for services via mobile money.

The taxman on November 17, 2023, mandated all mobile money payments to be conducted through the government’s designated pay bill number, which is 222222.

Via a statement, KRA explained that the directive is by the provisions outlined in the Kenya Gazette No. 16008 of 2022 and aligns with a Presidential Directive designating the use of Paybill Number 222222 as the sole payment platform for the government.

The move aims to streamline tax collection processes and enhance efficiency in financial transactions related to tax payments.

The statement further advised taxpayers to utilize the Payment Registration Number (PRN) or the reference number on the payment slips generated from various KRA Business Systems, including iTax, iCMS, EGMS, and KESRA iStudent. These identification numbers are crucial when making tax payments through mobile money platforms.

“Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) notifies taxpayers that all tax payments via mobile money shall only be made through the Government PayBill number 222222 with immediate effect in line with the Kenya Gazette No. 16008 of 2022 and the Presidential Directive designating the use of Paybill Number 222222 as the Government’s single payment platform,” the statement read in part.

To facilitate a smooth transition to the new payment method, the KRA has provided clear guidance for taxpayers. The outlined procedure directs individuals to initiate tax payments via mobile money by following specific steps. While the details of these steps weren’t explicitly provided, it is implied that users should input the relevant pay bill number (222222) and use the assigned Payment Registration Number or reference number as the account number during the transaction.

This development signifies a concerted effort by the KRA to modernize and centralize tax collection processes, leveraging the widespread use of mobile money in the country. Taxpayers are urged to adhere to these new guidelines to ensure compliance with the updated payment procedures and contribute to the effective functioning of the taxation system in Kenya.
