Minister links leaders to tax evasion in Eastleigh

Interior Secretary Joseph ole Lenku has sensationally linked leaders opposed to the police crackdown in Eastleigh to tax evasion activities in the area.

Fielding questions in a live radio interview with Easy FM, the cabinet secretary claimed the leaders were behind tax evasion cartels in Eastleigh.

He said the government has already compiled a report on businessmen and business enterprises in Eastleigh that have been evading paying taxes.

Somali leaders had on Saturday opposed the police security swoops in Eastleigh, which they say unfairly targeted muslims.

Led by former deputy speakerof the National Assembly Farah Maalim, the leaders accused the government of profiling muslims and Somalis in particular.

They also accused the police of planting evidence on some of those arrested.

Leader of majority in Parliament Aden Duale has also opposed the police swoops in Eastleigh and threatened to quit the Jubilee coalition.

So far, 4, 000 people have been arrested in the Operation Usalama Watch, according to Inspector General of police David Kimaiyo.
