Nyeri teen arrested with homemade gun, bhang to be charged

Police in Nyeri County have arrested a 19-year-old man who was found in possession of a homemade gun capable of firing and bhang.

In a statement, the National Police Service (NPS) said the young man was arrested following a tip-off from members of the public.

“Police officers from Munyange Police Station arrested a 19-year-old suspect after he was found in possession of a home-made pistol, stones of cannabis sativa and rolls of the same. He has been remanded in police custody,” the statement read in part.

The NPS also thanked members of the public for supporting the fight against crime and illegal drugs through community policing.

The teenager’s arrest comes just a day after a police officer attached to the General Service Unit (GSU) was also caught in possession of a homemade gun.

Mr Graham Ndichu Chege, an officer attached to the GSU, was arrested following a botched robbery in Kasarani sub-county.

Nairobi News exclusively reported on Monday, 29 May 2023, that the suspect had been on police radar for over four months.

It was a matter of when, not if, Mr Chege would finally be arrested by officers alarmed by an armed gang terrorising locals in Kasarani Sub-County.

A detective attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), who is privy to the ongoing investigations, told this reporter that the suspect was also being questioned over other robberies that have taken place in the area.

“Officers involved in the matter believe that he was the one leading a gang that has been giving the locals in this sub-county a hard time. Plans are also underway to arrest his accomplices,” said the officer, who spoke in confidence as he is not authorised to speak to the media.

In a police report seen by this reporter, Mr Paul Maina said three men on a motorcycle robbed him of his mobile phone while armed with a pistol at Cooperative area along Kamiti Road.

“Police officers on foot patrol responded very quickly and with the help of bodaboda riders they chased the suspects to Juja Weighbridge where the suspect’s motorcycle developed mechanical problem and Mr Chege was arrested,” the report reads in part.

Mr Chege then informed the officers that he was a GSU officer attached to the GSU Headquarters and Transit Section.

The officers searched him and found him with a homemade pistol, which they said was capable of firing.

“A bloodstained broken knife and a motorcycle with registration number KMFH 031U, make Ranger Black, were recovered,” the police report added.
