Obama Estate man on trial for threatening to kill his mother

A 27-year-old man who allegedly threatened to find a gun and shoot his mother after returning home drunk has been arraigned at the Makadara Magistrates’ Court for uttering death threats.

Lenin Byron Nyakwana is accused of threatening to kill his mother without lawful excuse at their home in Obama Estate in Njiru sub-county, Nairobi, on June 5.

Nyakwana is alleged to have uttered the words “I will become a criminal, acquire a gun come and shoot you, pia naenza chukua kisu niwandunge alafu ninjiue (I can also take a knife and stab you then take my life)”, words which the prosecution and police believe amounted to death threats to the complainant.

The suspect was also charged with causing a disturbance in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace for allegedly banging on his parents’ bedroom door while they were inside.

The complainant was in her bedroom when her son knocked and forced his way into her bedroom before she opened it.

The accused is said to have confronted his parents in their bedroom, accusing them of neglecting him and causing him distress.

His mother escorted him out of the bedroom and into the living room, pleading with him to calm down.

Mr Nyakwana is accused of banging objects in the room while swearing that he was going to get a gun before returning to kill both his parents and then himself when his mother asked him to stop causing chaos.

Neighbours, who heard the commotion, joined the complainant in calming her son and she was able to escape. She went to the Obama police station to report the matter.

Police officers accompanied her to her house where they arrested Mr Nyakwana and took him to the station.

However, Mr Nyakwana denied the charges before Principal Magistrate Eric Mutunga.

He was released on Sh100,000 cash bail and Sh150,000 alternative bail.

The case is scheduled to come up for mention on 24 July before the trial begins on 25 October this year.
