Pomp as Caster Semenya marries lesbian lover
South African 800m female athlete Caster Semenya has married her lesbian lover and fellow athlete Violet Raseboya, according to media reports.
The two are said to have secretly solemnized their union at traditional wedding ceremony last weekend, according to News24.
The wedding, which took place in Ga-Dikgale in the Capricorn District of Limpopo, was first reported by the SA Fame Awards Facebook page, which forms part of Limpopo Media.
“Celebrities in Limpopo are getting married in their numbers this festive season,” reported the page. “The latest to follow in the likes of gospel star Takie Ndou is Athlete Caster Semenya, whose traditional engagement party is being held in Ga- Dikgale in the Capricorn District of Limpopo.”
The two got engaged in May 2014, according to reports.
But in a swift rejoinder, Semenya, who burst into global limelight following questions into her real gender identity after she demolished her competitors in the 800m in 2009 at the IAAF’s World Championships in Berlin, refuted the reports.
“There is no wedding. Don’t believe the rumours you read in the news,” Semenya told the Sowetan website.
However, the Daily Sun reports that the 24-year-old Semenya sent her parents to Raseboya’s family in Polokwane to negotiate the bride price.
Semenya is reported to have paid Sh255,000.
