Posta Kenya reacts to AI blunder of customer care agents with three hands

Posta Kenya, the country’s postal corporation, joined the Artificial Intelligence (AI) wave to promote its customer care services. It only found itself at the centre of social media mockery and criticism.

The corporation shared an AI-generated promotional poster featuring models with peculiar anomalies, leaving netizens questioning the credibility of their communication team.

The now-deleted image, posted on X, depicted four smiling models wearing call centre headsets, encouraging Kenyans to reach out to their “able” customer care team.

The caption urged people not to believe in “jaba” (stories peddled on the streets) and to contact the customer care team for any clarification about products and services.

However, eagle-eyed social media users quickly spotted discrepancies within the AI-generated image.

Two of the models appeared to have three hands each, while the more glaring issue was the inclusion of two caucasian models among the four. One of the caucasian models also had a finger missing.

Kenyans took to the comments section, expressing both amusement and disappointment at the oversight.

One user pointed out, “Check out the hideous extra hands! Sasa hapa nani ako na story za jaba? Two of your fantasy AI models have three hands each! Na bado ata simu zetu huwa hamchukui!” (Who is spreading false naratives now? Two of your fantasy AI models have three hands each! And yet you still don’t pick up our calls!)

Mocking ensued, with users making light of the situation. “Talking of Jaba na watu wenu wako na mikono mingi. Wako HAND-as (laugh emojis)!” (Talking about jaba when your people have extra hands).

The public didn’t just stop at making fun; constructive criticism was also offered. “If you adopt tech, then do it correctly… first identify software that can be used at a commercial level, then get a pro who knows what they are doing… What is this surely @Posta_Kenya??” questioned a user.

Posta Kenya eventually removed the erroneous image after being exposed to the social media spotlight.

While the corporation has not issued a public comment on the errors, they returned to X with a photo of their customer care agents, accompanied by the caption: “Jameni wakenya…. Kwani hamjuwi jokes???” (Surely Kenyans, don’t you understand jokes???)
