Sakaja launches phase two of school feeding program
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has officially initiated the second phase of the school feeding program, “Dishi na County,” aiming to provide nutritious meals to over 180,000 students in public schools.
The inaugural phase, which commenced last year, initially covered more than 30 schools. Governor Sakaja, while launching the second phase at Lavington Primary School in Dagoretti North, noted the completion of modern kitchens, a crucial milestone ensuring the smooth execution of the program.
“We have successfully completed all 10 kitchens, and we are now rolling out the second phase of the Dishi na County program this term. Each kitchen produces 10,000 meals in a day and is supported by our partners, Giga Kitchen,” Sakaja announced.
The expanded program is expected to benefit 180,000 students, ensuring they receive a subsidised nutritious meal daily.
Governor Sakaja underscored the importance of providing healthy meals, stating, “When they are fed, they can concentrate in class.”
The County, in collaboration with its partners, plans to extend the program further, aiming to reach over 200,000 students by the time the third phase is implemented.
Under the agreement, each student contributes a nominal fee of Sh5 daily after the county subsidizes the food. The program has garnered widespread support, with even President William Ruto expressing his endorsement and encouraging other counties to consider launching similar initiatives.
Governor Sakaja, demonstrating his commitment to the cause, joined children for lunch at Kinyanjui Primary School in Dagoretti South and Muthangari Primary School Kitchen. The “Dishi Na County” initiative continues to make a significant impact in the lives of students, addressing not only educational needs but also contributing to their overall well-being.
