Senior UN official robbed by men on motorbike in Nairobi
Gunmen on a motorbike robbed a United Nations (UN) worker as he took an evening walk in Runda, Nairobi.
Police said the diplomat from the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire, who works for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), was walking his dog when he was confronted by the three men along Glory Road in Runda at about 8.30pm and robbed him of his mobile phones.
“One of them pulled out what looked like a gun and pointed it at him before ordering him to hand over everything he had and then took his two mobile phones – a Samsung and an iPhone – both valued at Sh170,000, before fleeing to an unknown destination,” police said.
They added that the emergency and humanitarian specialist was not injured in the incident and detectives did not have any further description of the suspects.
In 2022, a Zimbabwean diplomat was sexually harassed by a group of boda boda riders, leading to a nationwide crackdown on the sector.
A video shared then by a TikTok user named Benson showed the woman standing outside her car while making a call on her mobile phone as a mob of boda boda riders shouted at her.
A report filed at the Parklands Police Station showed that a boda boda rider blocked her car abruptly, forcing her to crash into it and leaving the rider with a broken leg.
The motorist stopped a few metres from the scene but was mobbed by a group of riders, some of whom stole her mobile phone and cash.
This forced her to take off but stopped a few metres away. The riders raced after her and blocked her car. They then opened her car door and sexually assaulted her, with some of them robbing her of her personal effects as she screamed in terror.
Half-naked, she was later rescued by a traffic police officer, who was alerted by other motorists.
In September 2023, a police constable attached to the Diplomatic Police was arrested and taken into custody on charges related to robbery with violence.
Jedidah Kasungo Kasolo was arrested following an order from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
