Residents of Witeithie area, Juja, Kiambu county were over the weekend left in shock after a pack of hyenas mauled a nine-year-old boy to death.

The boy was a grade four pupil at Highway Primary and is said to have been walking home with his friends on Saturday evening when they were attacked by the animals.

According to residents, the boys fled for their lives when they were attacked only for one of them to fall and was killed by the wild animals.

The boy’s remains were found on Sunday morning. His blood-stained clothes were found by quarry workers in a nearby bush.

Area residents say they are now living in fear and can no longer walk at night, even as reports say three hyenas were on Saturday spotted roaming in the village.

Worried that Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) officers have been doing less to contain the situation despite numerous requests, the locals are calling for prompt interventions to avert further crisis.

Such attacks are common in the area. Last year in September, a nine-year-old boy was mauled to death by a pack of hyenas.

The incident come just months after a 35-year-old man from the neighbouring Athi village was also attacked in a similar style by about eight hyenas.

Earlier, two more people had been attacked by the same animals at Witeithie village in Juja and Thika Constituency respectively.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has warned the people of Juja and Thika about the marauding animals that have been attacking residents.
