Student who drank ethanol in school lab set to join university

A Form Four student from Kenyatta Mahiga Secondary School in Othaya, Nyeri county, who drank ethanol during a Chemistry lesson and briefly lost eyesight, has found his way to university after scoring C+ of 51 points in the national examinations.

Dennis Muriithi almost lost his vision after drinking chemical reagents in the school’s laboratory during practical lessons in October, few weeks to the start of KCSE exams.

He was however treated at Othaya District Hospital with fears that he would permanently turn blind.

Muriithi scored C in English, Kiswahili (C+), Mathematics (C-), Biology (B), Chemistry (C+), History (B), CRE (B-) and Agriculture (C+).

He had taken the chemicals alongside other students but he was the major casualty.

The school’s principal Onesmus Mwangi revealed that the student had in second term been suspended for two weeks over an indiscipline case.
