How two County askaris made millions in bribes

A media expose has revealed how two of the most notorious Nairobi City askaris illegally collected millions of shillings in bribes from hawkers in the city centre.

In its final episode of the investigative series Kanjo Kingdom, the expose showed how one Akasi Ambasi alias Wasi Wasi transacted more than Sh18 million between 2013 and 2016 through his M-Pesa mobile account.

CARTEL

The money is believed to be proceeds from a brutal bribe-extorting cartel that preyed on hawkers and kiosk owners.

Also mentioned in the cartel was Alfred Marenya, alias Tall Brown, who is said to have cashed in more than Sh4.8 Million in 2015 alone.

Two weeks ago, Nairobi County Governor Dr Evans Kidero issued a statement announcing the suspension of five county officers who were named in the investigative series for their roles in crimes including extortion, brutality and murder.

“I would like to assure Nairobi residents that I will not sit back and allow a few rotten individuals to take us back to the old council habits,” Governor Kidero said in the statement.

The suspended officers were  Angeline Kamani aka Kamatha, Bernard Muli aka Gathauthau, Ambani Akasi, Julius Ochieng and Alfred Muranya.

MURDER TRIAL

Already, four city askaris  are facing trial for killing a city hawker last year in Nairobi.

The four were charged with killing Mr Irungu Kamau, a hawker, on September 16, 2015 at Nyam Hotel along Duruma Road Nairobi.

The four were released on a sh2 million bond with similar surety and an alternative bail of Sh500,000 each.
