Were looking for an exit from AmaZulu

Kenyan international Paul Were’s stay at South African club AmaZulu FC has been complicated by the club’s decision to enforce a pay cut on the players following the team’s relegation from the Premier Soccer League.

“The rules in the second tier league are tougher especially on foreigners because each team is required to have five local players aged below 23 years in the match-day squad. Only three foreigners are allowed,” Were told Nairobi News.

Relegation for the top division will drastically reduce the team’s income considering the lower rates derived from economic ventures such as acquisition of TV rights and gate revenue.

Were arrived back home early this week after his first full season down south. It proved a difficult first outing for the FISA Academy groomed player, who managed only five appearances out of a possible ten in the league during the course of the season.

TOUGHEST YEARS

“It has been one of the toughest years of my career but I thank God at least I had the privilege to be there and learnt many things. However, I am yet to make a decision on whether I will go back or not now that we have been relegated,” he said.

Were still has two years in his contract with the South African side from a three-year deal.

“Currently I am enjoying moments with my family because it has been tough being away from them for the first time for five months. I am thinking about my future, but it will all depend on whether an offer comes through,” the former Tusker and AFC Leopards winger added.

Meanwhile, Kenyan Premier League champions and leaders Gor Mahia are rumoured to be interesting in acquiring the player’s services.
