Who is DJ Dela, the entertainer caught up in Brenda Kawira’s saga?

The mysterious death of Ms Brenda Kawira has shocked many people and raised questions about her relationship with Marvin Kiretai alias DJ Dela, a popular entertainer in Nairobi.

Ms Kawira allegedly jumped off the fourth-floor balcony of an apartment building in Ngumba Estate, Kasarani, on  February 22, 2023.

DJ Dela has been in the entertainment industry for years and has even been featured in several TV programs.

However, his social media accounts, including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, did not have any messages of condolence for the deceased.

In fact, on his Twitter account, he seems to be returning to normal, posting and retweeting several posts.

When Nairobi News reached out to him for a comment, he promised to get back to them, which he hadn’t done before going to press.

“I am in a place we cannot talk, let me call later,” he told this reporter on Tuesday, March 21, 2023.

On his social media, DJ Dela posted an Instagram story with the lyrics from Meek Mill’s single 1942 Flows, the photo of his in a bike was posted with the lyrics, “They wanna see me fallAnd I will never sell my soulI’m on some shit that they ain’t seen beforeDream chasin’, catchin’ all my goalsI don’t need these hoesI’m gettin’ money, me and all my woesPlay with me, you know is all-out war…”

Ms Brenda’s friends and family took to social media on Wednesday, March 22, 2023, calling for DJ Dela’s arrest.

They believe he should be investigated further, claiming he was the last person to see her alive. They dispute the police’s conclusion that Ms Brenda committed suicide, alleging that DJ Dela’s clothes, the door handle, walls, and the mat were all bloody and that the balcony window was broken.

According to a statement released by Ms Brenda’s friends, “The DJ has given contradicting accounts so far on what transpired and he should be arrested as he is the last person who saw Ms Brenda alive.”

They also question the nature of the injuries sustained by Ms Brenda as recorded in the police report.

Police in Kasarani Police Station concluded that Ms Brenda committed suicide by jumping off the balcony of a house located on the fourth floor of a building in Ngumba Estate, Kasarani Sub-County,  a statement by the family and friends negates this.

“Ms Brenda, a medical biochemist, was excited about her upcoming departure to Australia for her Master’s program in June 2023,” the statement read in part.

In addition, the family says that she had left behind a diary that has since been taken in as evidence by sleuths attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), where she “poured her feelings about the violent nature of the relationship, infidelity, and expressed regret for ever meeting him.”

They then asked the DCI to “update the family on the investigation status and what has been established so far.”

In addition, they want the case to be investigated to its completion and take the necessary action to ensure that justice is served.

A police report seen by this reporter reveals that Ms Brenda had expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of their relationship.

The duo then went to the bedroom, where the lady allegedly left the DJ and rushed to the balcony.

“He then heard a loud thud and when he checked the balcony, he saw the body of the said girlfriend lying at the surrounding parking yard on the ground floor,” the report read in part.

It is then that he decided to rush her to St Nicholastica Uzima Hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival.

Police officers attached to Kasarani Police Station visited the scene and found the deceased body lying motionless in the vehicle’s backseat.

She had bruises on the right thigh, left knee, left cheek, and lower lip.
