Why Sakaja met Kalamashaka hip hop group

Nairobi Governor Sakaja Johnson convened a meeting with the renowned hip hop music group, Kalamashaka, on March 11, 2024, to discuss mentorship initiatives within the music industry and tackle the issue of youth rehabilitation from drugs and alcohol.

The meeting, held at the Governor’s office, aimed to address the escalating problem of substance abuse among young people in various parts of the county, particularly in areas like Dandora, the birthplace of the Kalamashaka group.

“Music holds significant influence in our society, but at times, it can exert a negative impact. With your wealth of experience, we must guide and mentor our young artists to produce content that positively shapes and influences our listeners,” remarked Governor Sakaja during the meeting.

In response to the discussions, Governor Sakaja expressed his commitment to collaborating with Kalamashaka to develop partnerships aimed at raising awareness about drug abuse among youths and implementing mentorship programs for emerging artists.

Among those present at the meeting were Kama (Kamau Ngigi), Roba, Otelo (Robert Matumbai), and Johny Vigeti, accompanied by their manager, Joseck Asikoye.

The collaboration between Governor Sakaja and Kalamashaka comes on the heels of the group’s participation in the opening ceremony of the Dandora Stadium on Friday, March 8, 2024.

During the event, the group commended the Governor’s efforts, stating:

“Our talent originated here. This stadium provides an opportunity for youth involved in crime to reintegrate into the community. It offers them a chance to earn a living and transform their lives. The Governor’s initiative is commendable.”

Established in the mid-1990s, Kalamashaka is renowned for pioneering hip hop music in the region.

Their contributions to the genre were celebrated in 2023 when they received a Lifetime Achievement Award during the 50th Hip Hop Anniversary, acknowledging their significant impact on the music industry.
