Why young professionals fear internships

Navigating the lower rank as an intern on the professional ladder is a rite of passage that serves as an initiation that young professionals must encounter during their journey as newcomers.

As a season that can occasionally become overwhelming, particularly within the corporate space where, a strict adherence to professionalism, ethics, and codes of conduct is vouched for.

Yet, as novices, breaching some of these established norms can have unfavorable repercussions, especially when not handled correctly.

While select organizations promote a progressive culture and exhibit the capacity to lead and mentor, many interns often find themselves ensnared in roles they approach with horror.

Stephen Okumu, an intern in a Nairobi-based organization says, “the thought of reporting to work became a source of dread. The relentless pressure, and constantly being told that even a high school student can do better work than me, nearly shattered my resilience. Presenting my ideas to my supervisor often resulted in dismissive remarks questioning my credibility as a newcomer.”

“In meetings, I resorted to silent nods, suppressing my opinions due to the fear of expression. I fervently hope my subsequent employment will be devoid of the torment I endured,” Okumu told Nairobi News.

On the other hand, Caroline, (not real name) says, “I am rarely assigned any work, and when I voice my concerns or request tasks, I’m branded as intrusive. Those from whom I seek assistance continually urge me to self-motivate and diversify, leaving me to ponder how such growth is attainable in the absence of guidance and patience.

Securing internships often proves to be a formidable challenge for students, who must knock on numerous doors for acceptance.

While certain organizations are willing to assist interns and treat them with dignity, others cause more harm than good, shattering many dreams.

Many organizations don’t offer any support regarding the well-being of these young professionals many hike to work, have nothing to eat, and no one to run to

Consequently, many young individuals are refraining from pursuing internship opportunities, with a significant number opting to initiate their own side hustles while awaiting more suitable job openings. This trend has contributed to the influx of inexperienced young professionals into the workforce.
