Ziwani, Pumwani, triump as Koth Biro enters quarter final stage

Koth Biro, the oldest football tournament in Kenya, which is in its 46th edition, enters the quarter-final stage as teams fight for the prestigious trophy and Sh200,000 prize at stake.

Pumwani, Ziwani All Stars, and Kingston have already made it to the quarters and will be in action when the matches kick off on September 14, 2023.

Other teams that will progress to the last eight stages will be known after the matches set for September 12, 2023.

Pumwani under the tutelage of coach Ryan Hamisi beat Rock City 4-4 in penalty shootout at Umeme Ziwani grounds after the match ended in a 1-1 draw in regular time.

Ziwani All-Stars on the other hand capitalized on the home advantage to beat Kariobangi Legends by a solitary goal.

The lone goal was scored by Evans Mieno in the first half-half via a spot kick, sending the home fans into a frenzy.

Kingston qualified for the quarters after beating Eastleigh South United 4-3 in post-match penalties.

The two teams drew 1-1 in the normal time.

On September 12, 2023, Biafra Kamaliza will face Riyadh United from 11 am while Leads United will battle with Black Mamba at 3 pm, with an eye on the last eight spots.

The quarter-finals of the tournament are expected to kick off between September 14-17, 2023, paving the way for the semis on September 23 and 24.

Ahead of the quarters, tournament chairman Paul Ojenge has thanked the teams for maintaining discipline and showcasing great talent.

He has also thanked Koth Biro fans for always turning out in large numbers to support their teams while at the same time maintaining discipline.

“The tournament has been going well and running very smoothly so far. We thank the teams for maintaining discipline and playing good and entertaining matches,” said Ojenge

“The fans have also been turning up in large numbers, and for that, we thank them too. We are however still appealing to sponsors willing to come and support these young boys to please do so,” added Ojenge.

This year the tournament is being sponsored by former Kenyan international Jamal Mohamed ‘Malo Malo’.

It comprised 32 teams from Nairobi, Kiambu, and Kajiado Counties.

The winner will bag Sh200,000 cash Prize while the runners ups and third-placed team will get Sh150,000 and Sh50,000 respectively.
