EXCLUSIVE: Chirau Mwakwere resigns as Wiper chairperson
Chirau Ali Mwakwere has announced his resignation as Wiper party chairman.
In an exclusive interview with Nairobi News, the seasoned politician, 77, also rubbished off the planned consultation meetings by Azimio principles Raila Odinga, Martha Karua and Kalonzo Musyoka in Nairobi.
Mr Musyoka is the Wiper party leader.
Mr Mwakwere, who unsuccessfully contested for the Kwale gubernatorial seat on a Wiper Party ticket in the August 2022 polls, has also vowed to protest any form of political handshake between President William Ruto and Mr Odinga.
“I cannot be in a party that is exhibiting confusion to the masses. If you count Azimio, don’t count me in. I resigned on December 25, 2022,” said Mwakwere.
“If these (Azimio) people are looking for a handshake (via protests), I will advise that they should not be given (one). Else I will launch protests from Digo land.”
Mwakwere also asked Azimio to give President William Ruto’s government a chance to work and deliver services to Kenyans instead of issuing consistent threats of demonstration.
“Give a chance to those who won to lead. You do not have to like the person. Azimio should not go around showing seeds of discomfort.”
Mwakwere’s comments come on the day Mr Odinga, Ms Karua and Mr Musyoka held a consultative meeting at the Kamukunji grounds, in Nairobi in which the trio questioned the legitimacy of President William Ruto’s win in the August 2022 polls.
Mr Odinga said claims by a supposed whistleblower to the effect that the polls were manipulated in favour of President Ruto should be taken seriously.
The said whitsle blower claimed – via a dossier – that Raila Odinga defeated President Ruto by more than two million votes in the August 2022 polls.
The identity of the said whitsle blower has not revealed.
A career diplomat and politician, Mwakwere has in the past headed the Transport and Foreign Affairs Ministries.
He also served as the Kenya High Commisioner to Tanzania. Wiper party officials were not available for comment on Mwakwere’s resignation claim.
