This is why you have to drive at 80km/h on Nairobi Expressway
Motorists who will be using the Nairobi Expressway as from today, Monday, July 17, 2023, will have to drive at a speed of 80km per hour.
This follows the temporary suspension of operations at the Syokimau, Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) and Mlolongo by the government through Moja Expressway Company.
Operations on the Expressway, which runs above Mombasa Road, were suspended last Wednesday, July 12, 2023.

“Moja Expressway Company is glad to inform you that operations have resumed at Mlolongo, Syokimau and SGR toll stations as from 10am. For your safety, we urge all motorists using the Nairobi Expressway to be mindful of the ongoing restoration works at selected locations and drive within the prescribed speed limit of 80km/h,” said Moja Expressway Company, which is the the toll-road operator.
Three sections of the Expressway were closed down following a government directive after anti-government protests led to the uprooting of fences and vandalizing of parts of the road.
On Thursday, July 13, 2023, Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen said the government will use over Sh700 million to make the road.

Some of the demonstrators who participated in vandalizing the road have already been arraigned in court.
“Those who are even planning to repeat these acts of causing damage again will meet the full force of the law,” Mr Murkomen said.
He added that government action will be severe to prevent such damages from happening in the future.
“We will use these actions that happened here yesterday to be an example to everyone who is going to do such an act in future,” he said.
