Sakaja laughs off ‘biased’ opinion poll

Nairobi Governor has hit out at an opinion poll that suggested he is among the county bosses that have performed poorly since assuming office.

The poll recently conducted by ISS Africa-Kenya, concentrated on the performance of counties.

The pollster ranked Governor Sakaja among the bottom ten governors, holding position 38 out of 45 counties with 33.2 percent ratings.

The ratings rattled the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) governor who has been charged with running Kenya’s capital for the past year.

Sakaja, formerly Nairobi Senator and considered a close ally of President William Ruto, accusing the pollster of being biased.

The county boss claimed, via a statement on his X account, that he had delivered exceedingly to Nairobians and rating him as a poor performer is ‘laughable’.

He accused the pollster of ignoring his achievements which surpassed what the previous administrations did.

“I see such ratings and laugh. Nairobi has collected the highest revenue in 5 years, paid 7,640 CHVs monthly from August last year (2022), Sakaja pointed out.

The governor said that the pollster did not rate him fairly even after rolling out the school feeding programme which is already in its first phase, where 80,100 students from public primary schools are benefiting from subsidised lunch.

“Build 10 kitchens to feed 250k children, already 88k onboarded.”

Sakaja also stated that in one year, his administration has issued bursaries worth Sh1 billion compared to Sh3 billion which were issued in ten years by the last regimes.

To improve the health sector in Nairobi, the governor said he has already rearranged all hospital boards and distributed medicine and medical equipment worth Sh244 million.

According to the pollster, Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jnr was the best performing governors with 73.8 percent ratings followed by his Homa Bay counterpart Gladys Wanga with 70.5 percent ratings, Cecily Mbarire of Embu came third with 70.2 percent, Patrick Ole Ntutu of Natok came at position four with 70 percent while Murang’a governor Irungu Kangata completed the top five list with 69.8 percent ratings.
