‘Cord supporter’ in court for carrying bullet to Uhuru’s prayer rally
A man who was found with a bullet in his pocket during Saturday’s thanksgiving ceremony for the ‘Ocampo Six’ at Afraha Stadium in Nakuru has been charged with unlawful possession of an ammunition.
The 21-year-old man was arrested at the stadium’s entrance during a security screening process.
According to the prosecution, the accused was allegedly a diehard supporter of the opposition coalition, Cord.
Mr Dickson Oduor appeared before senior principal magistrate Wakumile Ndururu where he was charged with illegal possession of a bullet.
The court was told that the police suspected that the accused had the intention of disrupting the rally attended by President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy, William Ruto, among many other dignitaries.
Mr Oduor denied the charges and was released on a Sh20,000 cash bail.
The case will be mentioned on April 28.
Separately, eight other suspects who were arrested over allegations of plans to disrupt the prayer rally were also released Monday after spending three days in police custody.
Speaking at Nyayo Gardens after their release, they said that they had gathered representatives of the integrated internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Nyandarua, Laikipia and Nakuru counties whom they were meeting at a Nakuru hotel when they were arrested.
Their spokesman, Mr John Njoroge, said their meeting was meant to make arrangements for the IDPs to attend the prayer rally.
“Before our meeting at the hotel, we visited the regional coordinator’s office and we informed him that we were planning to attend the prayer rally,” said Mr Njoroge.
He said they were arrested an hour into the meeting by plainclothes officers who held them for interrogation at Central Police Station.
Mr Njoroge said the police arrested them on suspicion that they were planning to disrupt the prayer rally.
