Anyien, Bianca lead the way in junior strokeplay championship

Kevin Anyien has put down an early marker midway through the 2024 Kenya Junior Strokeplay championship for boys and girls at the Muthaiga golf course. Anyien is at the top of the leaderboard with a score of 149 from 75 in the first round and 74 in the second round.

In round 1, Anyien scored 41 in the first nine with only one birdie, three level pars, three bogies, and one double bogey. He recovered in the second nine with an impressive score of 34 from two birdies, six level pars and only one bogey for a total of 75.

In the second round, he was much better with an identical score of 37 in the front nine and 37 in the back nine for a total of 74, an improvement by one stroke from day one. He is at the top of the leader board, two strokes ahead of Shashwat Harish.

“For me is just to stick to my game plan, do what I’m supposed to do all day, play the same shots, play the same place, and enjoy the game,” said a beaming Anyien.

He claims there is no pressure on him at the top as the rest have to catch up and the pressure is on them. The weather has been unforgiving, but Anyien says he has adapted to the conditions.

“The balls are not flying that much but you have to cope with that and play as it is because you can’t change the weather,” he explained.

The top girl in the leaderboard after round two is Bianca Ngecu in position seven overall with a score of 157, 77 from round one, and 80 in round two.

“the first day I played really well with only one double bogey. The second day I made a few mistakes and I dropped shots. I have to play well the next few days,” she said.

It is tight at the top as Krish Shah finished third only two strokes behind Shashwat and four strokes behind Anyien. Junaid Manji who had a great second round is up to tied fourth with Mintash Thacker with a score of 155. Joshua Maina is sixth, with Ngecu, Tsevi Soni, Jelani Kihanya and Audrey Gachora tied with Maahir Patel completing the top ten.
