Body of minor reported missing found floating inside well
A minor who went missing on Friday, September 29, 2023, was over the weekend found floating in a well at a residential apartment within Kawangware in Dagoretti North Sub-County.
Currently, sleuths attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are investigating the matter and have recorded statements from the mother of the minor.
“The mother had earlier reported that the minor went missing in unclear circumstances, and investigations were launched into the matter,” a police report seen by Nairobi News read in part.
A day after the minor was reported missing, a neighbor went to fetch water at the well when he found the body of the minor floating.
The neighbor, in return, informed the mother, who alerted the police, and a multi-agency team, including fire brigade officials, rushed to the scene and retrieved the body.
“For the longest time, we have been making requests that they cover this well in vain. Probably, the minor fell inside accidentally,” Mr Alex Kimonge, a local, said.
Ms Mary Kamau, another local said that she has always ensured that her children don’t enter the compound of the apartment where the child drowned because the well was posing a danger to them.
“I will never allow my children to enter that compound because the dwellers have been complaining that the well was uncovered and hence posing a danger to children,” Ms Kamau said.
Police officers are yet to establish how the minor drowned, even as they also planned to have the owner of the compound record a statement.
This was the first time such an incident was reported in the apartment despite concerns from locals who wanted the well covered.
The body of the minor was taken to the City Mortuary pending an autopsy before the DCI sleuths can proceed with the investigations.
