A 30-year-old woman, Ann Wambui, has been charged with threatening to kill her mother, Jane Muthoni, in Ruai, Nairobi, on September 14. The accused is facing charges contrary to Section 223(1) of the Penal Code.

Wambui allegedly issued death threats to her mother, saying, “Nakwambianga nitakuua na husikiangi, nitakuua saa hii (I keep telling you I will kill you. I will kill you right now),” which the police and state prosecution office believe constituted threats to the complainant’s life.

The incident unfolded when Ms Muthoni discovered that one of her business items was missing from her house.

She went to her daughter’s bedroom to inquire about it, but the suspect woke up and allegedly threatened her with death. Ms Muthoni fled the room, and the suspect pursued her to the sitting room.

The suspect allegedly wrestled her mother to the ground in the sitting room, pulling her hair as she screamed for help. A neighbor intervened and escorted Ms Muthoni out of the house.

The incident was reported to the police, who visited the complainant’s home and recovered a hammer beneath a pillow and a panga beside the suspect’s bed. These items have been kept as exhibits in the case against Ms Wambui.

The accused denied the charges in front of Principal Magistrate Irene Gichobi at the Makadara Law Courts. She was released on a cash bail of Sh30,000.

The case will be mentioned on November 11, 2023, and the hearing will commence on February 26 next year.

Due to concerns for her safety, Ms Muthoni has relocated from her home and sought accommodation elsewhere. Her neighbor, who rescued her, is listed as a witness in the case, along with two police officers.
