EXCLUSIVE: I never planned to be a comedian, I’m a journalist – Njugush

Celebrated Kenyan comedian Timothy Kimani, popularly known as Njugush, has revealed that his career in comedy was not a planned endeavor but rather a path he stumbled upon due to life’s twists and turns.

“No, comedy was not initially what I had in mind, but life has a way of leading you down unexpected paths,” Njugush shared with Nairobi News.

He mentioned that he pursued a Bachelor’s degree in journalism, indicating a different career trajectory.

“I studied journalism,” Njugush continued, “But here I am, fully immersed in comedy. Life’s twists and turns led me away from my journalism aspirations.”

He emphasised his satisfaction with his current life while highlighting his ongoing quest to improve himself continually.

Njugush said, “Yes, I am very content, but I am also continuously striving to become a better version of myself. This is why I keep pushing forward.”

One of Njugush’s early breakthroughs in television was his role on the comedy show ‘Hapa Kule News.’ He subsequently gained widespread recognition for his unique character in the TV show  ‘The Real Househelps of Kawangware.’

Njugush’s journey from journalism to comedy shows the capacity for individuals to find their true calling in unexpected places.

As 2023 progresses, Njugush is looking to bag a million subscribers on his YouTube channel. He reportedly receives approximately Sh1 million a month from YouTube, thanks to his hilarious skits.

He also earns a good amount of money from adverts and endorsements as a social media influencer.

Meeting with fellow actor and scriptwriter Abel Mutua proved pivotal to Njugush’s career.

“I met Abel Mutua, who was looking for someone to host a new show he had launched. He saw how funny I was and saw potential in me. He reached out and told me he was looking for a ‘stupid’ [goofy] person,” Njugush explains.

Njugush was later called in for a shoot by Abel, thinking that he was going to do something in relation to journalism; however, when he got there, he was told to take off the suit he had donned and get into a bathtub. He said that it was at the shoot that things started changing in his life.
