County Assembly team names Cholera hotspots in Nairobi
Health officials in Nairobi remain on alert following cases of cholera reported in the country.
Speaking to the press on Thursday, County Assembly Public Health Committee Chairperson Mr Maurice Ochieng said measures have been put in place to curb the spread of the disease.
The chairperson said his committee had identified areas considered hotspots and recommended the necessary measures.
“The hotspot areas are Soweto (Kibra Constituency), Matopeni (Embakasi Central), Ngando ward (Dagoretti South), and there is a case also in Kangemi. So we urge the Executive to act with speed to stop the spread of this Cholera,” Mr Ochieng said.
Mr Ochieng also said two people have died after battling the disease.
“There are so many cases, like this week had cases at Ng’ando ward where we have more than forty infected of Cholera and two died, something that is confirmed in the last two days.”
The Mountain View ward MCA said his committee and the County Assembly will put pressure on the administration of Governor Johnson Sakaja to ensure that all food handlers within the county are cleared by the health department.
“They should do a breakdown on all the food vendors within the CBD.”
The County Chief Executive Committee Member of Health, Wellness and Nutrition Dr Anastasia Mutethya Nyalita who appeared before the committee to answer questions related to her docket said that they have put in place measures to arrest cases of Cholera.
She however failed to respond on the number of cases of the diseases reported in the county and the deaths, saying that the team will issue the statement later.
The committee has also asked the county to carry out a fumigation exercise within the county to get rid of insecticides, and rodents within hotels.
This comes amid fears across the country that led to the closure of Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls’ High School in Kakamega County following the deaths of two students in a case of suspected food and water poisoning.
