Davido: Why I sued Kenyan media house for April Fools Day article
Nigerian artiste, Davido has confirmed his decision to pursue legal action against a Kenyan media house for their April Fool’s prank.
Initially hesitant, Davido, born David Adedeji Adeleke revealed he ultimately chose to proceed after receiving counsel from his father.
In an interview with American content creators, Davido highlighted the potential repercussions on his status and career if he didn’t take action.
“I am taking legal action because it could just go the wrong way,” he said.
The Prank came a day after his performance in Nairobi.
It claimed his arrest at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport with narcotics on his private jet.
He says the story quickly escalated into a more severe issue when he received a concerned call from his father.
“My dad was calling me asking, ‘Where you at?’ I’m like, I’m in Nigeria, I’m home,” Davido recounted.
“And at first, I was like nah. I’m not gonna report it, just let it go its April Fools and my dad was like no because you can fly to any country now and then they bring 20 police to check you,” Davido shared.
He said the risk pushed him to pursue legal action to protect his image and prevent such issues in the future.
“I’m taking legal action because it might just go the wrong way if we just don’t,” he explained.
In his legal action statement, Davido said:
“Your statements are false and affect our client’s professional reputation by falsely stating and publishing to third parties that, among other things, our client is a narcotics user/trafficker and is engaged in activities that ore criminal in nature.”
“Such baseless allegations not only severely damage Davido’s reputation but also inflict irreparable harm on his personal and professional life. The egregious nature of the article cannot be overstated.
“It is our client’s position that the contents of the said article are designed and calculated to spread false, destructive and defamatory rumors about him.”
