Dogo Aslay: Women, alcohol ruined me

One time bongo flava favorite Dogo Aslay had admitted that women and alcohol are to blame for his deteriorating music career.

At only 12 years of age, 15 years ago, Aslay took East Africa by storm with the release of his first song Nitakusema which went on to become a hit jam topping music charts both in his home country Tanzania and in Kenya.

Subsequent years were equally a success as Aslay continued churning out hits as a solo artiste before forming the Yamoto Band which also enjoyed a fruitful five plus years before the group disintegrated.

It has been argued by the other members Mbosso Khan, Beka Flavour and Enock Bella that Aslay was the cause of the group’s downfall which until its split was still topping the charts. With the group dead, Aslay embarked again on a solo career which has witnessed flashes of successes garnished with inconsistency.

The one time musical ice cake struggles continues and now Aslay is confessing to having dropped the ball and loosing focus. In his defense he blames women, alcohol and music success that found him at a young age.

“At the age of 20, I had already earned my first million, I was making so much money at that age from shows and that’s when my problems began,” Aslay confesses.

Young and rich, Aslay says he wanted to enjoy life.

“I partied a lot. And why not? I had the money, I could do whatever I wanted. One thing led to another, I got hooked to booze and women to the point that I lost focus with my music, forgetting that it’s because of the same craft that I had become successful in the first place,” Aslay said.

The 27-year-old now says he has embarked on a journey to right his wrongs and reinvent himself.

His confession comes days after legendary Bongo flava talent manager Said Fella, who nurtured him, revealed that the singer’s musical career has taken a dip in recent years because of over indulgence in alcohol and women.

Fella, who discovered Dogo Aslay as a teenager, said the singer has all it takes to become successful but the pleasures of this world have become his bondage.

“Aslay’s talent is inborn, unlike most artistes whose success is pegged on effort. However, Aslay’s downfall has been occasioned by his indulgences with the pleasure of the world. He got into this ‘adult stuff’ a little bit too early, I mean alcohol and women. People will say I am hating but I have seen this boy grow. He should go easy on these things and focus on his music, there is enough time to enjoy life,” Fella said.
